Thanks to my colleagues on the Legal Writing Institute listserv!
Following a query asking for resources for law students interested in improving their writing skills, members of the LWI suggested the following:
Books
- Deborah E. Bouchoux The Aspen Handbook for Legal Writers is excellent. It has sections on grammar and punctuation, as well as many other wonderful features, including a section devoted to help for ESL students. Each section contains practice questions and links to helpful websites.
- Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers The Bedford Handbook
- Teri LeClercq and Karin Mika Legal Writing with Style
Websites with explanations and exercises with feedback:
- Joe Regalia, Writing Like a Lawyer (website with tips and exercises)
- Towson University Online Support (website with explanations and exercises that provide immediate feedback)
- NoRedInk (geared toward elementary and secondary students but looks good for ESL)
